The volcano on our doorstep
Why Mt Yasur is special
Mt Yasur is an active volcano in South East Tanna. From the crater rim you can watch it rumble, smoke and throw glowing lava into the air.
Tanna Lava View is in Isaka Village, right in front of Yasur, so you're close to the action. You don't need a long day trip from the other side of the island. Our guides drive you across the ash plain to the volcano and stay with you at the rim.
Two ways to see it
- Evening volcano tour. Arrive in daylight and stay as darkness falls, when the lava glows brightest. Part of our stay packages, half-day tours and the Full-Day Cultural Tour.
- Sunrise volcano tour. Depart at 2:00 am to watch the crater at night and the sun rise over Tanna. Part of the Full-Day Nature Tour.

Volcano tour questions
Is Mt Yasur safe to visit?
Visits are only allowed when the official volcanic alert level permits. Check the current level with the Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-Hazards Department. Our guides follow the rules at the crater, so stay with your guide and keep to the marked areas.
Is there an entry fee for the volcano?
Ask us when you book and we'll confirm exactly what your package or tour covers.
Sunrise or evening: which is better?
The evening tour is the classic: you see the crater in daylight, then the glow as it gets dark. The sunrise tour leaves at 2:00 am for night views and dawn over the island, and continues into our Full-Day Nature Tour.
What should I wear to the volcano?
Closed shoes, long trousers, a warm layer and a rain jacket (it can be windy and cool at the rim), plus a torch. Bring a cloth to protect your camera from ash.
